Hey, before we start, try to look around your house. Look everywhere that you can think of. So, how many unused items did you find after doing that? I bet it’s more than 10 items. Have you ever thought about how do that much unused items were left lying around inside your house?

This is the same question that I asked myself when I was cleaning my bedroom last month. There were so many clothes, old books, and electronic stuff lying around the room that I rarely or never used. If you experience similar things, here are some ways that you can do with those unused items.

Throw It

The simplest thing that you can do is just throw it away. At the end of the day, it will stay unused if you keep it. If you have some time in your hand, you can throw it away by giving it to the nearest recycling center around you.

Also, you can earn money by taking your items to recycling centers that pay, but be aware that not all items are recyclable. For example, plastic products and some glass-made products such as mirrors are non-recyclable.

Sell It

There are a lot of people who see your unused items as valuable things. As people used to say, one man’s trash is another man's treasure. Maybe you can sell it by doing a garage sale or by selling it on a certain marketplace such as eBay or Amazon.

If you know where to look around to sell certain items, try to look for a certain marketplace that is only selling a specific item such as clothes, shoes, watches, furniture, gaming consoles, and more.

Two of the marketplaces that I found by doing this are:

  • Grailed, which focuses on selling secondhand popular brand products and
  • Chrono24, who focuses on selling luxury watches.

I got quite lucky when doing this because I found out one of the worthless hats and a Seiko watch that I found inside my room is valued at around 100 USD each. It doesn’t end there, I also found some NFL jerseys that were valued at around 50 USD each.

So, try spending some time rummaging through your unused items, there might be a ‘diamond’ hiding in plain sight.

Donate It

If you think that some of your unused items are still in good condition but you don’t want to keep or sell them, try to donate them. There are a lot of organizations and donation centers where you can donate your item through. The items that you donated will go into the hands of war victims, fire victims, and other less unfortunate people.

Goodwill and The Red Cross are a great place to start because they are among the organizations that accept donations of unused items. Finding them is as easy as typing their name on Google Maps. If you are unable to find a place collaborating with this organization for donations, there may also be local organizations in your area that accept this type of donation.

If you find yourself a bit skeptical about a certain organization, try to look around your local neighborhood or hometown. There might be some people who are struggling financially or going through something. If you think that some of your unused items can have a good use for them, donate them, personally.

At the end of the day, there’s nothing wrong with helping people who are in need. Maybe your donation will have a really good impact on their life.

Keep or Use It

If some items have a lot of sentimental value, try to keep them and give them some good uses. For example, you might find an old watch that was given by your loved one, and you don’t want to throw it away.

Spend some money on fixing it and bringing it back to life. Once it’s fixed and looks brand new again, you can give it new life by wearing it regularly to cherish its sentimental value.

So, that’s it, folks. Having too many unused items in your house can lead to a cluttered and overwhelming environment. However, you can manage it by trying at least one of the methods mentioned above, which may help you reduce and organize some of your possessions.

To make it easier to decide which items to sell, donate, keep, or throw away, create a simple list. You never know what treasures you might find when you do this, and your home will be much cleaner in the end.
